Gov. Winfield Dunn and Sen. Douglas Henry Team to Turnout Vote for David Fox

Nashville, Tenn. – David Fox announced today that two of Nashville’s most beloved statesmen, former Gov. Winfield Dunn (R) and Sen. Douglas Henry (D), are on the phones reminding Nashville voters to vote for David Fox as Nashville's next Mayor.

“I could not be more pleased and thankful to have such an outstanding and bipartisan pair of Nashville leaders as Gov. Dunn and Sen. Henry helping us get out the vote. They are two of Tennessee’s finest, and I am honored to have their support.” Fox said.

“And the work they are doing is very important,” Fox said. “Our internal polls show that this race is currently a dead heat among those voters who are definitely going to vote and have already decided who to vote for.”

“But now the push is on for those who are still undecided or need a reminder to go to the polls. So I am deeply grateful to Gov. Dunn, Sen. Henry, and our thousands of supporters and volunteers in every neighborhood across the county, who are reminding their friends, families, co-workers and neighbors to vote for David Fox.”

Early voting in the mayor’s race continues through this Saturday, September 5. Election day in the mayoral run-off is Thursday, September 10.

Govenor Dunn endorces reelection of Chris Devaney for TN GOP Chair

Governor Winfield Dunn has endorsed the reelection of Chiarman Chris Devaney in an email letter to members of the Republican State Executive Committee. Chris Devaney is being challenged by Joe Carr. Joe Carr ran in the Republican primary against Senator Lamar Alexander seeking the Party's nomination for the Senate and then after the primary he never did endorse Alexander. In addition to Devaney and Carr, Karen Bennett is seeking the post of chair. The election will be tomorrow.

Dear Republican State Executive Committee Members:

Now that the dust has settled and the political atmosphere in our state and across the country is fairly clear, I am even prouder than ever before to be a Republican!

The results of November 4th nationally restore my hope that we can bring common sense and logic back to the governing process as they were used originally to frame our nation.

Here at home, I find myself prouder than ever to have been a part of your early efforts to lead our state Republican Party. Having been associated with the Party for so long now, I feel I have been a part of setting Tennessee on a better course.

I must say that Chairman Devaney’s vision, courage, and devotion to the TNGOP have been unparalleled contributions.

I am extremely pleased that he has chosen to seek another term as our Chairman. The degree of progress we have made across the board in state government is phenomenal and he is due a huge amount of the credit for our success.

An evening at the Charles Williamson uninhabitable barn

Tonight I enjoyed a bean supper event at the ranch of Charles Williamson in rural Goodlettsville. Charles is running for the State House in District 50. The event was in Charles's "uninhabitable" "barn." Friends and supporters of Charles's enjoyed good food, conversation and good music.

Wow! The barn did not look nor smell like any barn I have been in before. It is a large attractive brick structure.  The event was in the upstairs of the barn in a large vaulted rustic space with exposed brick and wood paneling.

What should be an unimportant foot note in this race between Charles Williamson and his liberal opponent has unfortunately dominated much of the recent campaign. The contest between Williamson and his opponent should be about ideas but Willamson's opponent wants to keep talking about Williamson's barn.

In a nutshell, here is what all of the controversy is about: Charles moved back to the "barn" on his bison ranch where he had previously lived and he registered to vote at that address and he listed that address on his campaign filings with the election commission.

It turns out that the residence was never approved as a home. Construction permits were legally filed more than a decade ago and the structure passed all inspections but the construction permits were never properly closed out and an occupancy permit was never issue. Now, codes will not issue an occupancy permit because the property may be in an unmapped flood plain. In the May 2010 flood the property did not flood and no one knows of the property having ever flooded.

Charles could have engineering studies done and pursue a lengthy, costly and time consuming effort to get the permits issued. Instead, he purchased another home in his district, a one-bedroom condo in Bellevue. The election commission has no problem with what has occurred but what should be a non-issue will not die.

His opponent has made all kinds of wild accusations claiming Williamson does not respect the hard work of the codes department and somehow claiming that the actions of Williamson is an insult to the victims of the 2010 flood. How he makes that leap in logic I do not know but The Tennessean is helping him in beating a dead horse.

I had a pleasant conversation with Carol Swain.
We discussed the premier her new TV talk show "Be the People"
based on her book of the same title.

To combat this campaign diversion and smear campaign by his opponent and The Tennessean, Charles needs lots of help. About 300 people attended the event tonight. Among the guest was Governor Winfield Dunn and his wife Betty. Carol M. Swain, professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University and TV talk show host made opening remarks and introduced Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Gary Chapman who led the crowd in singing the national anthem.

Following the national anthem, a musician played a moving rendition of Amazing Grace on bag pipes. Charles Williamson then made remarks briefly addressing the controversy about his uninhabitable barn and thanking everyone for their support.

Throughout the evening we were entertained by the bluegrass music of The Nashvegas Ramblers.

A registered professional geologist, Charles Williamson is president of Geotechnical Environmental Services, Inc. and owner of Rockdale Ranch in Goodlettsville where he raises a herd of American Bison. Williamson is running for State House in District 50. The sprawling district encompasses Joelton, Scottsboro, Goodlettsville, Bellevue and parts of West Nashville. The House 50 seat is open as a result of the retirement of Gary Moore.

Williamson is also endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police and was the winner of the Davidson County Republican Party’s annual Straw Poll with 73% of the vote.

NASHVILLE: David Hall, the Republican nominee for Congress in Tennessee's 5th District, welcomed the endorsement of former Tennessee Governor Winfield Dunn during a day of campaigning at early voting sites in Davidson County on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010.

In his remarks to volunteers preparing for a day of neighborhood canvassing, phone banking and working the polls, Governor Dunn stated, "This campaign reminds me of my first run for office, when so many people had written off the idea of a Republican being elected Governor of Tennessee. I admire David and his family and this remarkable grass roots campaign. David has earned my vote by virtue of his courage, humility and hard work." Dunn continued, "It is time to replace Jim Cooper with someone who will bring Federal spending under control and who will stand up to Nancy Pelosi and Washington special interests. I believe David Hall is that man, and I am looking forward to casting my vote for David Hall."

In 1970, Winfield Dunn decided to run for the Republican nomination for governor of Tennessee. Republicans had not even fielded a nominee in the 1966 election. Dunn defeated four primary opponents then defeated his Democratic opponent to become the first Republican elected governor of Tennessee in half a century.

Said Hall, "Governor Dunn's excitement about our campaign's momentum and the potential of replacing career Congressman Jim Cooper is inspiring. I was honored by being the recipient of the Governor Winfield Dunn Leadership Award

At the Davidson County Republican Party picnic yesterday, I was honored by being the recipient of the Governor Winfield Dunn Leadership Award presented to me "for exceptional leadership and community service to the citizens of the State of Tennessee."

The award was presented by former governor Winfield Dunn himself. I was not expecting the award. It had been kept a secret.

Governor Dunn was introduced and he started speaking and saying he wished to honor someone and then Governor Dunn stated telling something about the person to be honored and I realized it was bio he was reciting. My history of public service and political activity was cited going back many years, including my service in the metro council. My volunteer work over the last year on behalf of the Party and my grassroots efforts in organizing the party were lauded.

Governor Dunn is one of the most respected and admired people in the State. He is the elder statesman of the Republican Party and served as Governor from 1971 to 1979 being the first Republican elected statewide since reconstruction. It is indeed an honor and a humbling experience to be honored by Governor Dunn.

To Governor Dunn and the Davidson County Republican Party, Thank you for this honor.
