Poll: Tennessee voters support Trump, Blackburn

By Jon Styf, The Center Square, Oct 26, 2023- Tennessee voters would support Robert F. Kennedy more than Joe Biden in a race where they would lose to Donald Trump for president in a new Beacon Center poll.

The nonprofit policy center that supports free market solutions to public policy polled 1,181 potential Tennessee voters with 59% supporting Trump and 29% supporting Biden in a head-to-head race. In a three-way race, Trump polled at 48% with Kennedy at 22% and Biden at 18%.

Biden, however, was favored 75% to 9% for Kennedy amongst voters who identified as Democrats.

Trump was favored with 64% to Ron DeSantis’ 16% in a potential Republican primary.

There was strong support from 50% of voters to install a maximum age of 75 for president with 24% somewhat supporting and 12% neither supporting nor opposing the proposal.

In a potential Senate matchup, Marsha Blackburn was favored with 43% support against both Marquita Bradshaw and Gloria Johnson but Bradshaw had 32% support while Johnson had 27% in potential head-to-head races against Blackburn.

Of those polled, 44% identified as Republican, 24% as Democrat and 13% as neither. Meanwhile, 67% said they would definitely vote, 13% would probably vote and 14% would maybe vote.

Hagerty and Blackburn are among the eleven pro-Putin Republicans opposed to arming Ukraine.

by Rod Williams, May 25, 2022 - It has been three months since the Russian unprovoked attack on its neighbor Ukraine.  Against all odds, Russia has failed to take the country.  When the attack occurred, most thought Russia would overwhelm Ukrain within days. It didn't happen. Ukraine successfully stalled the Russian advance and where Russia did take territory it has been recaptured and the Russians forced to withdraw, everywhere except in the eastern Donbas region of the country where Russia is still in control.

Former KGB director Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly wants to rebuild the Russian empire. He has said the collapse of the Soviet empire “was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”  

He has said, "As for the Russian people, it became a genuine tragedy. Tens of millions of our fellow citizens and countrymen found themselves beyond the fringes of Russian territory." He has taken the position that Russia has an obligation and a right to defend Russian-speaking people anywhere and claims his aggression is on behalf of Russians in other lands. He will fight on behalf of Russians in other countries even if has to kill or make refugees out of most of them in the process. 

He also justifies his aggression based on fear of being encircled by enemies. Of course, NATO and the European Union are no threat to Russia. NATO is a defensive alliance and has no aim to forcibly annex any nation. Both the claim of aiding mistreated Russians in foreign lands and the fear of being encircled by enemies is a rationalization for Putin's aggression. 

Since 2008, Russia has illegally occupied 20 percent of Georgian territory and has essentially made Georgia a client state. In February and March 2014, Russia invaded and subsequently annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine. Unless Russian aggression is stopped in Ukraine, the Baltic countries of Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia are likely to be the next targets of Russian aggression based on the same logic of aiding Russians in foreign lands and resisting encirclement.

Russia's war on Ukraine has been especially brutal. Russia has not just waged war on Ukraine's military but has targeted civilians, bombing apartment buildings, hospitals, and indiscriminately leveling cities. Russian forces have rounded up and murdered civilians and deported many to areas deep within Russia.

In light of Ukraine's brave resistance and the witness of the horrors of Russian war crimes, most of the civilized world has come to the aid of Ukraine, cutting off Russian access to commerce, boycotting Russia, and giving Ukraine the means to defend itself. The US has stepped up to the plate. While I wish we could have established a no-fly zone, the US is wise to do all it can without directly engaging Russia. A no-fly zone would have no doubt led to open Russian hostility with the US. Russia is a nuclear-armed nation and may very well launch nuclear weapons if war developed with the US or a NATO country. Putin has threatened such. We are wise to avoid direct engagement with Russia but are correct to do all we can short of military engagement. We are doing the morally correct and strategically wise thing by giving Ukraine the means to defend itself. 

Recently, Congress passed a 40 billion dollar aid packet to Ukraine. The bill supplies Ukraine with military, humanitarian, and medical resources. In the Senate, the vote was 81-11, with all votes against coming from Republicans.  The bill had previously passed in the House.

The action of the eleven Republicans disgusts me. Throughout the Cold War, it was Republicans who were steadfast in providing funding for nations resisting Russian aggression and making sure our military was adequately funded to protect our nation. It was Republicans who could be counted on to help weak nations in their fight to remain free. While the Cold War generally had bi-partisan support there was always a segment of Democrats in Congress who voted against funding the Cold War and who were isolationist and some were advocates of unilateral disarmament. 

Now, Democrats are doing the right thing, all of them, and 11 of 50 Republican senators are against giving Ukraine the means to defend itself. We are witnessing David standing up to Goliath and all David asks for is a slingshot and eleven Republican senators say, "no."

If Tennesee had party registration, in protest of the pro-Putin vote of our two Senators I would have to change my registration from Republican to independent. If Hagerty or Blackburn ever pursue a run for the Republican nomination for President, I will vote for someone else. In the next primary, if either is challenged by a sane credible Republican, I will contribute to that candidate's campaign. 

For someone in my income bracket, I contribute a considerable amount to Republican candidates. I am for now abstaining from any contribution to the campaigns of Hagerty or Blackburn or the National Republican Party or The National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC), are any PAC that may funnel money to either of our Senators or any of the other nine Senators on this list.  I have just made a contribution to the campaign of Evan McMullin of Utah, an independent challenging Mike Lee. 

I doubt I will vote for either Blackburn or Hagerty when they next run for election. One does not have to vote for the lesser of two evils. Abstaining is an honorable option. I have been a lifelong Republican and an active Republican. I am still a Republican but not a pro-Putin, appeasement Republican.

Senator Marsha Blackburn: MY VISIT TO THE BORDER

The following is from Senator Marsha Blackburn:  

On Friday, I visited the El Paso Sector Customs and Border Patrol/Department of Homeland Security migrant processing center in West Texas, where overcrowded facilities can barely contain the illegal immigrants apprehended each day. My visit came just one week after 1,036 people - the largest group to cross the border from Mexico - arrived there on May 29th.

Within thirty minutes, I watched twelve people in three groups try to enter our country illegally. One man who was trying to enter illegally told me he had been following media reports and believed that he could stay once he had crossed. Based on media reports, migrants are aware that pregnant women and families are able to enter the United States more easily and they are using these loopholes to their advantage.  
 

On Friday alone, five kilograms of fentanyl was seized - that is enough to kill nearly 2 million Americans. Opioid addiction is ravaging the United States. We cannot address this public health crisis if we do not cut off the major influx of these deadly drugs at the southern border. 

The border patrol agents are crystal clear about the need for more resources, including and especially additional agents. While technology is helpful, it cannot replace the physical human ability to monitor, respond, and catch immigrants. Drug cartels use Facebook ads to smuggle migrants and bring drugs across ports of entry. CBP does not currently have enough agents to staff the various checkpoints and catch the criminal activity.
 

CBP also needs more equipment and transportation capabilities, as well as additional space to house illegal immigrants once they are in custody. This time last year, the El Paso Sector had 4,733 family units in custody. Now, they have a shocking 104,131 - up 2,100% in just one year. On top of that growth, the facility is only capable of housing 125 people but is forced to hold nearly 1,000 migrants in detention facilities. 

The system has cracked. We have a full-blown humanitarian crisis on our hands. Congress has to act, and we need to address all aspects of the crisis.

In the past couple of months, I have sponsored two pieces of legislation that I hope will target important aspects of the border problem. The Ending the Fentanyl Crisis Act will ensure that sentencing penalties for trafficking fentanyl reflect the deadliness of the drug. It's time the punishment fit the crime for drug traffickers. 

The Accountability of Care of Unaccompanied Alien Children Act will protect children from trafficking and further exploitation of the horrific situation at the southern border.
 

I will continue supporting legislation that addresses all aspects of this complex immigration crisis. We cannot have national security without border security. Until our border is secure, every state is a border state and every town is a border town.

Press release, June 5, 2019 - Today, Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) spoke on the Senate floor about her newly introduced resolution to encourage free speech and inclusive debate on college campuses.

“On the eve of National Higher Education day, I am introducing the Campus Free Speech Resolution of 2019. It’s a first step in restoring sanity to free speech for American college students,” said Senator Blackburn. “It recognizes that universities should protect the free and open exchange of ideas and that freedom of speech is worth protecting in a world increasingly hostile to democracy.”

Lonnie Spivak: Phil Bredesen was a good govenor but Marsha Blackburn should be the next senator for the state of Tennessee.

by Lonny Spivak as posted on Facebook, Oct. 2, 2018 - So you like Phil Bredesen—even though you typically vote for the republican candidate, you’re thinking about pulling the lever, punching the button or casting your vote for ole Phil. I personally like Former Governor Bredesen. I’ve met him on several occasions. Heck, I even had breakfast with him as we sat at the Waffle House high-bar while discussing this election.

As Tennessee Governors go Phil was not the worst governor we’ve had in the state of Tennessee, but there is a HUGE difference in being the chief executive of a state and the state’s representative in the U.S. Senate.

As you know, Tennessee has it’s own constitution which includes a Balanced Budget Amendment. This means that no Governor can present a budget to spend more money than we as a state plans to take in via taxes and fees. As governor, Phil had no choice but to cut spending and kick hundreds of thousands of people of TennCare, in order to balance an upside down budget. In addition, during his term as governor, Tennessee started it’s shift to a “Red State” which now sees republican super majorities in both the state house and senate. But as we all know this is not the case in D.C. as we face a $21 Trillion national debt.

In the senate, Phil can be decidedly more partisan and liberal than he ever could as the chief executive of Tennessee. With six year terms he would be part of the “Resistance” as he voted with Senator Schumer and gang to repeal tax cuts, cut military spending, block judicial nominees, block the border wall and continue the social spending spree driving our national debt even higher.

I first met Congressman Blackburn during the Tennessee Income Tax Debate, when GOP governor Don Sunquist pushed for a state income tax while Marsha served in the State House. Representative Blackburn was one of those champions who fought for everyday Tennesseans and led the charge against the income tax, and was one of the main reasons Tennessee remains a low tax, low debt state.
In Washington, Congressman Blackburn worked to prevent human trafficking. Her legislation kept the internet free. She worked to cut taxes for the middle class and stood strong for the sovereignty and security of Tennessee and the United States.

To me there is a clear choice. Marsha Blackburn should be the next senator for the state of Tennessee and she is clearly the best choice to keep the United States and Tennessee moving on the track of peace and prosperity.

Rod's Comment: This reflects my thoughts on the matter. I could not say it any better than has Lonnie so I am reposting his Facebook post. Phil Bredesen was a good governor. One may even argue that he governed in a more conservative manner than the Republican governor who preceded him. However, a vote for Bredsen will elect Chuck Schumer as the Senate Majority Leader, Elizabeth Warren as the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and Diane Feinstein as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Marsha Blackburn breaks with President Trump over tariffs.

by Rod Williams - Representative Marsha Blackburn has been one of Trumps staunches supporters. She often appears on national TV defending the President's policies.  I was pleased to see her break with Trump over the issue of tariffs.

Yesterday she said President Donald Trump's administration should reconsider broad tariffs to avoid unintended negative consequences on Tennessee's economy and workers. In a letter to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross she said Tennesseans stand to suffer disproportionate and negative consequences under broad tariffs. She said Tennessee industries, including automotive, agriculture and distilled spirits could be hurt by retaliatory tariffs.  The letter was also signed by Republican Reps. Phil Roe, Scott DesJarlais and Chuck Fleischmann.

Senators Bob Corker and Lama Alexander have been outspoken in opposition to Trump's start of a trade way.  I am pleased to see Republicans take a stand for common sense. Trump's trade war could have disastrous consequences and lead to a world-wide economic depression. Even if the trade war does not escalate into a world-wide trade war it could still reverse the recent economic gains resulting from the recently passed tax cuts and cause Republicans to be badly beaten in the mid-term elections.

Maybe the "Blue wave" will be more like a Blue ripple.

The closely watched Arizona congressional special election where Republican Debbie Lesko was running for a vacant seat against Democratic candidate Hiral Tipirneni was won by Lesko. The vote was 52.6 percent to 47.4 percent for Lesko, a 5 point margin.  Lesko was expected to win the seat in a heavily Republican district that Trump won by a 21 point margin. Pundits had said that is Lesko did not win by double digits then Republicans were in trouble for the fall election. She did not win by the margin Republicans hoped for but I am pleased she didn't lose.  While five points is not the 21 point margin Trump won by it is not a close election.  I think this signals that the "blue wave" may not be a tsunami after all but a blue ripple. If Democrats take the House, of course, they still pick the speaker, chair all the committees, can start the impeachment of Trump, and hold up the Republican agenda.  A less strong win, however, will not carry all the way to governor offices and city council races across the nation the way a massive Democrat win would do.

If Tipirneni had won that would have created euphoria and contagious enthusiasm among Democrats. Tipirneni outspend Lesko in Arizona.  A Tipirneni win would caused Democrats to pour even more money and volunteers into races across the country and Republican money and enthusiasm would have been suppressed.

Closer to home, Marsha Blackburn has gained 7 points on Phil Bredesen in the past week. And, this is after Bredesen spend a ton of money. Bredesen has been presenting himself as a moderate and touting his record as mayor of Nashville and Governor of Tennessee.  While Bredesen is not Mr. Personality and is not very good at glad-handing and back-slapping and kissing babies, he is an attractive candidate and was a good governor and mayor. He is probably the best candidate the Democrats could possibly find.  According to a recent poll by Mason-Dixon Polling, 46 percent of voters support the Democrat Bredesen, while 43 percent support Marsha Blackburn.

I don't know the number of undecided in the recent poll, but I would assume this early it must be high.  This early, a 4% margin is not significant. If you are reading this blog, you probably care a lot about politics; most people don't.  Most people don't even think about who the candidates are or who they will vote for this far out. A lot of people don't start thinking about how they will vote until about 30 days before the election.

It is a long time until November and a lot can change.  More dirt could emerge on Trump, he could do something really stupid, and his trade war could materialize and cause the economy to tank. On the other hand, it could look like we have finally reigned in North Korea, nothing of significance has still not been proven on Trump or maybe the investigation has come to a close without any evidence of Trump- Russian collusion, and people may be enjoying their fatter paychecks.

I still expect Democrats to gain in the fall and Republican to lose. We may lose the House, but the Blue wave may be a Blue ripple.

Bob Corker's endorcement of Marsha Blackburn

by Rod Williams - Admittedly, Bob Corker's endorsement of  Marsha Blackburn was lukewarm. I would have have liked to have seen him exhibit a little more enthusiasm and at least use her name rather than refer to her simply as "the nominee." However, I am not jumping on the hate-Bob-Corker bandwagon.  Phil Bredesen was a good mayor and a good governor as Corker has said. Bredesen's  biggest accomplishment was ended the out of control TNCare program created by a Republican governor. Corker was a fellow mayor of a major Tennessee city at the same time as Bredesen. They had a cordial working relationship. Maybe they became good friends. Both are honorable men. With the partisan divisions so strong, many think we have to hate the other side. Maybe it is because I have siblings and a mother who are Democrats that I realize that Democrats are just mistaken; not evil.

I would not vote for Bredesen, simply because he is a Democrat and will vote like a Democrat including electing the next speaker. That does not make him a bad person. I just prefer Republican policies over Democrat policies and that is why I prefer Blackburn over Bredesen. In an interview, that is essentially why Corker said he preferred Blackburn.  I respect Bob Corker for not demonizing Bredesen. While I wish Corker would campaign for Blackburn, I respect his decision not to do so.

Corker, in my view, has occasionally rightly criticized Donald Trump's intemperate and crude behavior and White House disorganization, but has praised Tump when appropriate.  Marsha Blackburn has been an uncritical Trump cheerleader.  I have always liked Marsha Blackburn but would have liked her to be a less enthusiastic Trump loyalist.  The difference between Corker and Blackburn has been obvious. The press wanted to magnify that difference and create a division between the two. Corker was goaded by the press to say something. He was pushed into making a statement. There are those who love to see  and create division. Democrats are looking to exploit any divisions within Republican ranks and right wing talk show pundits with hours of broadcast time to fill each day, thrive on creating controversy. If not for the mainstream press allied with Democrats looking to exploit Republican divisions, and conservative pundits concerned with ratings urging  people to fight each other and magnifying every slight difference, this would not be news. 
 
Corker has long been a target of the extreme right. I think it is less for what he does than that he has a thoughtful calm demeanor.  Some on the right are looking for bomb throwers, not calm thoughtful statesmen.  Corker has said he is voting for Marsha Blackburn and he contributed the maximum allowed contribution to her campaign. That is good enough for me.

We Passed Tax Reform...What's Next? Health Care Choice.

by Marsha Blackburn - We ended 2017 on a great note by passing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which President Trump has signed into law. Right away, we saw some companies give bonuses to their employees and announce new investments. As we enter the New Year, we are still seeing the effects of passing this bill, as the stock market continues to break records and unemployment continues to drop. The economy is finally back on the right track, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress and the President to make sure this law benefits all hardworking Americans.

Now that tax reform is behind us, what’s ahead of us? You’re going to see from Capitol Hill more work on health care as we dismantle Obamacare.

As many of you know, the Obamacare individual mandate was repealed in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act bills. This mandate forces Tennesseans to buy health insurance they did not want or could not afford. I am thrilled that this is off the books, and am focused on passing my bill, the Health Care Choice Act, which will allow health insurance to be sold across state lines. So many of you  have told me that you want choice, you want flexibility, and you want different options for different types of health insurance plans that fit your and your family’s needs.

The Health Care Choice Act is about you and will increase the number and types of health insurance plans available to you. Even better, it will allow you to buy health insurance the same way you purchase other types of insurance: online, by mail, or on the phone.

You don’t need federal bureaucrats in Washington telling you what kind of health insurance you can or can’t have. I am going to do everything I can to pass this legislation as we continue to dismantle the disastrous effects of Obamacare.

Marsha Blackburn on the Uranium One scandal, The Clinton Foundation and Hillary's pay-to-play

From Marsha Blackburn - Many of you contacted my office this week about the news stories on the Uranium One deal and the Clinton Foundation. As part of our oversight work here in the House, my office has been looking into the Clinton Foundation and the appearance of “pay to play” activities and improprieties while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State. In 2016, I authored a report outlining my findings, my efforts to have other agencies investigate, and the responses we received from those agencies. With the latest news bringing up more accusations and questions, House committees have opened further investigations into the matter. I support their efforts and will do what I can to get the facts. 

My Comment: The mainstream media can still not get excited about Obama era scandals or any wrongdoing involving Hillary Clinton or the Clinton Foundation but we may be reaching the point to where the establishment media cannot keep sweeping Clinton crimes under the rug and hiding them deep within the newscast.  When it come to revelations of Hillary misconduct, instead of screaming, bold, above-the-fold banner headlines, the press hides the stories as if they were inconsequential.  It looks like the crimes of Hillary Clinton and the misuse of her office as Secretary of State are going to see the light of day, however.  It may not be too late for Hillary to go to jail or at least have her reputation damaged to the point that even the most liberal partisan can no longer hold her in high esteem. I hope Marsha Blackburn and others in Congress will be relentless in pursuing this issue.

The liberal establishment will claim that any focus on Hillary misconduct is a distraction to take the focus off of the alleged Trump campaign-Russian collusion, but the truth matters.  We already know that the source of the allegation of Trump-Russian collusion was allegation in a dossier resulting from Clinton campaign financed opposition research that involved Russian sources. Maybe the real Russian collusion is the Hillary campaigns.   So far, there is no proof of Trump's collusion with the Russians to influence the election but we know that under Clinton's term in office as Secretary of State that Russia was able to get control of 20% of America's uranium and that at the same time $145 million dollars in Russian contributions were made to the Clinton Foundation. 

In addition to the Russian connection there is a lot of other evidence of corruption and misuse of Hillary's office. It appears to me that the Clinton Foundation, which never delivered more than 15% of their donations to the causes they supported, was nothing more than an instrument to facilitate pay-to-play. There should be a full investigation.  The Uranium One deal should be fully investigated as well as the allegation that the Clinton Foundation likely facilitate the distribution of watered down HIV/AID medications in sub-Saharan Africa through its Health Access Initiative. Allegation of Hillary's corruption and misuse of her office should be fully investigated. I am hopeful that the truth comes out.

Marsha Blackburn on cracking down on sanctuary policies

From Marsha Blackburn -This week, we also addressed the lack of immigration enforcement and the spread of dangerous sanctuary policies that have failed the American people and harmed too many lives.

Through years of working on immigration issues and accountability from federal agencies, I have come to believe that lack of enforcement means that these sanctuary cities have turned every state into a border state, and every town into a border town. We owe it to the families of those who lost loved ones to take action to prevent these horrible crimes. They have waited far too long.
