Francis Guess, Republican civil servant, business leader, civil rights advocate, deed at 69. RIP

Published July 24, 2015 by NashvillePost.c... - Francis Guess — a revered titan among Nashville’s civic leaders — has died at his home. He was 69.

Known largely as a civil rights advocate and humanitarian, Guess served on the National Civil Rights Commission and as the first African-American commissioner for the Tennessee departments of Labor and General Services under then-Gov. Lamar Alexander.

Guess, a Nashville native, worked in military intelligence with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict. He would later earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from Tennessee State University and a master’s degree in business administration from the Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management. Eventually, he completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program at Harvard University.

Say it Loud; Black, GOP, and Proud

Race hustlers and limousine liberals go ballistic when Blacks start wondering off the liberal plantation. Despite fifty years of Democrat political loyalty and millions of spending by the government to subsidizing poverty, the state of Black America is pretty dismal.  Not many, but some Black Americans are starting to question the wisdom of staying loyal to the Democrat party.  On some issues such as education reform and abortion, some Blacks are realizing they are more aligned with Republicans than Democrats. And some Blacks are beginning to realize that they fare better under free enterprise than hand-outs and quotas.

The Civil Rights establishment and race hustlers do not celebrate achievements by Black Republicans. Clarence Thomas, Condoleezza Rice, or Colin Powell are denounced as "tokens" or Uncle Tom's or not authentically Black. This year their were some historic firsts: Mia Love became the first Black female Republican elected to the House, Tim Scott became the first Black Republican from the South elected to the Senate since Reconstruction, and Will Hurd the first Republican Black man from Texas elected to the House since Reconstruction.

In response to these achievements, the Civil Rights establishment and race hustlers have expressed revulsion and contempt rather than celebration. In this article Black Democrat political analyst Juan Williams examines this: Williams: Say it loud: Black, GOP and proud.

Liberal racist hate Blacks who won't stay on the plantation

Some of the most courageous people in America are those African-Americans who dare defy liberal orthodoxy and think for themselves. Liberals love Black people as long as they stay on the liberal plantation. Liberals claim to love diversity but they hate diversity of thought. Let a Black person become a Republican or member of the tea party or express support for free enterprise and limited government and the liberal establishment turns on that person with a vengeance.  They are routinely denounced as Uncle Tom, tokens, and race traitors. It takes true courage to be a Black conservative.

Earlier this week, Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina appointed  Republican Representative Tim Scott, who happens to be Black, to fill the Senate seat of Jim DeMint who resigned to take over leadership of the Heritage Foundation. In an op-ed piece in the New York Times, Adolph L. Reed Jr., a  political science professor at the University of Pennsylvania, explain why Tim Scott is nothing but a "cynical token." Below is an excerpt:

Mr. Scott’s background is also striking: raised by a poor single mother, he defeated, with Tea Party backing, two white men in a 2010 Republican primary: a son of Thurmond and a son of former Gov. Carroll A. Campbell Jr. But his politics, like those of the archconservative Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, are utterly at odds with the preferences of most black Americans.
