Like most observers, I was expected Obamacare to be overturned. It was upheld. The individual mandate was ruled constitutional, not based on the Commerce clause however but on the taxing authority of the federal government. Now what?

Asheville's John Boyle: Agenda 21 is the stuff of paranoid
by Rod Williams, July 27, 2012 - An editorial appearing today's Asheville Citizens Times, Agenda 21 is the Stuff of Paranoid Delusions, exposes some of the paranoia and silliness associatied with the John Birch Society led anti-Agenda 21 campaign. I am glad to see someone exposing the radial fringe and having a little fun in the process.
It is unfortunate that the Republican Party has allowed the JBS to become the puppet master and they dance to their tune. This Agenda 21 stuff makes me embarrassed to say I am a Republican at times. It certainly makes me embarrassed to say I am part of the Tea Party movement. How did the Republican Party become the party of the nut-case fringe instead of the party of responsible adults?

Just recently, according to news release from the City of Asheville’s Office of Sustainability, “sustainability directors from 22 cities across four southeastern states met in Asheville on June 14 and 15 to share notes and strategies for creating greener and environmentally sound organizations. The Southeast Sustainability Directors Network kicked off its first conference with a series of workshops and sessions designed to spotlight energy and waste reduction techniques that work across southern cities.”
Aha! Allow me to translate that fancy leftist prose: “They’re spotlighting ways to steal your land!”
I bet all these sustainability warriors flew here in black helicopters and are secret members of the Tri-Lateral Commission.And then:
The Agenda 21 paranoia has even touched quasi-governmental agencies not even in the sustainability business, groups such as the nefarious Southwestern Commission, a regional agency that offers planning support for the mountains’ seven westernmost counties and is funded by those counties. Tea Party folks and members of the 9/12 Project, another conservative group, have asked Cherokee County commissioners to stop funding the commission because of fears it’s promoting Agenda 21 mandates.Another excerpt:

“It’s just patently untrue,” Gibson said. “I won’t use the word ‘preposterous,’ but it’s just not true. It’s false. We were created by local governments to be servants of local governments.”and this:
Gibson said he’s fairly conservative, but he’s skeptical of Agenda 21 theorists because he hasn’t seen any empirical evidence — numbers-based facts — that the UN or any other international organization is trying to take land or make sweeping mandates.
When it comes to Agenda 21, the paranoia and conspiracy theorists just muddy the waters on sustainability, which basically is an effort to develop responsibly while maintaining the world’s beauty, which we’ve got plenty of here in the mountains.
“As a friend said to me, ‘if not sustainability, do you want unsustainability?’ If not ‘smart growth,’ do you want the opposite?” Gibson said.
Clearly, he’s a commie. (read more)This anti Agenda 21 campaign has turned into something of a witch hunt. There is almost a competition to see who can spot Agenda 21 in action. Anything, someone does not like is being labeled part of Agenda 21 including traffic roundabouts, wide shady sidewalks, traffic calming, bike lanes, annexation, green ways, high rise residential developments, and mass transit. It is ridiculous. I am embarrassed that our Republican dominated state legislature joined the silliness by passing a meaningless Anti-Agenda 21 Joint House Resolution. I am proud of Governor Bill Haslam for not signing it.

First Tuesday presents Bill Hagerty
Coming on Tuesday, July 3rd will be the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner, Mr. Bill Hagerty. If you register early the meal is only $15.
1st Tuesday is a always a great
event. Hear interesting speakers in a room with a view, have a nice meal
for a reasonable price and network with other Republicans. Park for free
or cheap in the public garage beneath the library, which is less than a
block away. Anyone is welcome to attend. The meeting is exactly one
hour long, so you can attend and not be away from work that long. If you are a Republican or a
conservative and in the Nashville area, you really owe it to yourself
to start attending 1st Tuesday. Previous guest speakers have included, Governor Bill Haslam, Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey, Mayor Karl Dean, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, economist Authur Laffer, and former Speaker of the House and presidential candidate Newt Gringich.

On January 18, 2012 we attended a meeting at Public Works regarding the aforementioned
property at 7739 Charlotte Pike which was downzoned in 2011 (prior to Weiner’s election) from residential (R40) to AR2A. At that meeting, Councilwoman Weiner was told, “Congratulations, you’ve inherited a landfill.” It’s been a dump for over 30 years accepting inert material, so we were led to believe. We were advised that the property owner wanted to change it to accept Construction & Demolition materials. We were told that we had the opportunity to have this landfill with benefits or to have this landfill without benefits. As it had already been rezoned by the Council, we were advised we had no direct control over the use; basically, we were stuck with it. The benefit proposed was that of a Recycle Convenience Center on 3 acres on Charlotte Pike like the ones at Omohundro and at Anderson Lane. Responding to them, (Weiner) stated “my support hinges on the neighbors response.”
We (Bo Mitchell and Weiner) scheduled a meeting for March 13 at Gower School and required
that notices be sent to residents beyond the ‘requirement’ so that more homeowners were notified. Anticipating push back, we were quite surprised that, although there were serious questions asked, no one said no. You will see a letter (from Weiner) of support in the record written to you prior to hearing from the neighbors that they were opposed. You see no one reached out to us between that March 13 meeting and May 29. As soon as we received phone calls on May 29 from neighbors, we called an immediate meeting for May 31 at which time they shared with Councilman Tygard and Weiner their specific reasons for opposition. Weiner wrote Joey Hargis (Board of Zoning Appeals) on June 3, 12 and 14 to let him know of opposition to the proposal and to confirm and clarify her opposition consistent with the commitment in January that her support hinged on the neighbor’s response. As a result of yesterday’s BZA hearing, we learned that such a use (convenience center like Omohundro, Anderson Lane and Dr. Richard Adams Dr.) is not permitted on AR2A, only on IR zoning. We relied on the information provided to us by Public Works, Mr. Charlie Mitchell (the applicant), his staff David Lowry, his engineer Joe House and his attorney Tom White. We and the neighbors were told all along that this was a permitted use on AR2A and that they needed BZA, Solid Waste and TDEC permission to proceed. Charlie Mitchell committed to us that, once the C & D permits were completed, he would donate the prepared property for the Recycle Convenience Center.
In a nutshell,
we feel the applicant Charlie Mitchell used a need in the
community (convenience center) to make the case that the combination of
that accessory use with another C & D facility would be warranted,
when such a use is prohibited in this land use policy for AR2A. In his
application to you, Mr. Mitchell interchangeably uses the words
Collection and Convenience Center which is misleading and inconsistent
with standing regulations. Given that we feel misled, we
respectfully urge you to reconsider and reverse your prior decision of
March 29 to amend
the Solid Waste 10 Year Plan to include another C & D facility. We also respectfully request the Solid Waste Board rescind its approval issued to Mr. Mitchell on March 29, 2012 and correspondingly send TDEC notice of your actions. In order for this to be accomplished, we understand a special emergency meeting of the Solid Waste Board may need to be held. If this is the case, please make the appropriate arrangements to have this meeting set at the earliest date possible prior to July 19,2012 when the BZA meets again to consider further information relative to the applicant’s request to site a C & D Landfill in the 22nd Council District.

The case for a revenue neutral carbon tax
In today's Tennessean in an editorial Healthy future may lie with carbon fee writers Teresa Campbell and Pam Jones make the argument that climate change "brings drought that decreases crop yields and
shrinks glaciers that provide water for millions of people. It also
intensifies disasters that create “climate refugees,” and it turns the
oceans more acidic, threatening the base of the aquatic food chain." And, they say, "America’s carbon energy tab is paid for with lost work days, premature
deaths, property damage from violent storms and fires, failed crops and
droughts."
To combat climate change, they say, "We need a market-based solution that will
help our economy, protect American businesses from foreign competition,
be simple and transparent enough for all to understand, and encourage
other countries to follow suit."
That solution they say is the carbon tax. Now, I know that many on the right are going ballistic and pulling out their hair denouncing "junk science," "Agenda 21," and Al Gore. If you really believe that global warming is conspiracy of the overwhelming majority of the world's scientist designed to usher in a one world socialist government then I can understand your reluctance to support a carbon tax. However, if you believe that the majority of scientific opinion may actually be correct and that climate change may be occurring, then please carefully consider a carton tax.
A carbon tax is a market approach to applying a cost to a detrimental externally. I have taken a strong stand in opposition to a carbon cap and trade system because it can be manipulated to pick winner and looser and lacks transparency, will inevitably be subject to corruption, and will drastically increase the scope and size of government. A cap and trade system would reward people for doing things they might have done anyway or reward them for doing things they might have not done anyway.
I offer the example of saying I would sell you my carbon credits for trips I will not take to Knoxville and I will agree to not take two trips a day. You can buy my credits and then take a trip and not feel guilty. That is cap and trade. It is bound to be corrupt.
A carbon tax is not subject to such manipulation. While the details of how the revenue generated from the carbon tax is off set by a reduction in other taxes or returned to the consumer is an important detail, the concept is one that conservatives should embrace. Many conservatives have embraced the carbon tax, including America's leading conservative economist Aurthur Laffer, Reagan's chief economic advisor and creator of the Laffer Curve, and the free market think tank The Cato Institute.
It is disappointing that so few committed environmentalist have endorsed the carbon tax, preferring the cap and trade instead. For many, their liberalism and support for big government solutions out weights their support for reducing greenhouse emissions.

Antioch Pastor, Ed Clay, to organize “Christians for Staats”
Today, Pastor Ed Clay has been announced as the Chairman of the Christian Coalition for the Brad Staats
for Congress campaign. The addition of Pastor Clay provides added momentum to a campaign that has
seen a recent surge in support, as frustration with Jim Cooper mounts in his twenty-second year as a
Congressman and primary day approaches. Pastor Clay, an influential voice in the Nashville Christian
community, has led as a pastor for thirty years, most recently at the Church of God at Antioch on Mt. View
Road. Clay is also a Vietnam veteran, having served as a Lance Corporal from 1973 to 1975 in the Marine
Corps. Pastor Clay also was recently appointed to serve as Volunteer Chaplain for the Metro Nashville
Police Department.
A ringing political endorsement from Pastor Clay may have come as a surprise to his friends and his
congregation, because he has not been politically active. However, that changed when Clay heard Brad
Staats speak at a recent campaign stop. While Staats’ Christian faith was an important factor, Clay says,
“the most important thing was that I could feel how emotional this campaign is. Brad is an everyday
American who is worried for his kids’ futures and for the health of all the small businesses just like his and
knows we need changes in Washington now.” Clay also noticed that Staats is in tune with the concerns of
regular people because “he is one of us” and he “hasn’t been cooped up in Washington.”
Staats, a devoted member and Sunday school teacher at Cornerstone Church, was thrilled to receive the
support of Pastor Clay. “I’m honored to bring such a great man and leader in this community on to our
team and by having Pastor Ed Clay leading ‘Christians for Staats’ will be a major asset throughout the
campaign.”

YES! It is about damn time. Thanks to Councilman Robert Duvall and all the other members of the Council who made it clear to Arriola that he could not hang on to that office. The Council will now be charged with the task of filling that vacancy.
