Why I will no longer call myself a member of the tea party.

Recently the Gallup poll reported that support for the tea party was down from 32% in November 2010 to 22% today.  Quite frankly, I am not surprised and expect further decline unless the tea party can become less dogmatic and extreme.

When the tea party first came on the scene, I was all on board. I opposed Obamacare and run away deficits and wanted Republicans to stand strong, vigorously oppose Obamacare and not raise taxes. I felt I was part of a movement. I saw the tea party as a movement of newly energized people who for too long had been silent. On April 15th, 2009 I attended a tea party event and wrote enthusiastically about the experience. I was exited when Tea Party Express rolled into town and reported on it.

From the very first however, I was put off by some of the fringe that I saw attaching itself to the movement. At an early tea party event on Memorial Plaza (also called Legislative Plaza), either the event referenced above or another early event, there was a John  Birch Society booth. I was surprised. I thought the JBS had disappeared long ago. I had not heard anything from them in years.

 The John Birch Society emerged sometime in the 50's as a conservative, anti-communist organization.  There were chapters all across America.  Many respectable people joined the organization. On specific policies I almost always found myself in agreement with the JBS.

However, the problem with the John Birch Society is not the position they take on most issues but that they are nuts. When they talk about "the insiders" they do not simply mean people with influence the way you and I might use the term. When the JBS talks about "insiders" they are talking about people who belong to a secret society that has been pulling the strings since about 1776 with the formation of The Illuminati. According to JBS, The Illuminati has front groups and subsidiaries like The Council on Foreign Relations, The Trilateral Commission, The Bilderburg Group and others.  The JBS believes almost nothings just happens or is the result of clashing interest or ideologies but is planned and controlled by a handful of elites they call "the insiders."  Not everyone in the JBS even knows what the organization believes and they join  not knowing. If they are only causal members they may be clueless about what it is they have joined.

By the mid 1960's, the JBS had gained so such power in the conservative movement and in the Republican Party, that William F. Buckley and Barry Goldwater issued a joint denunciation of the organization and urged conservatives to disassociate from it. After that the organization twiddled.

With the advent of the tea party, the John Birch Society found fertile ground for resurgence and growth.  One of the projects they took on was something called Agenda 21. Agenda 21 was a 1992 UN sponsored study suggesting a course of action for sustainable development. It was not a treaty.  Some countries voluntarily implemented some of the Agenda 21 recommendations.  The JBS developed training kits where one could become an expert on Agenda 21 and present slide shows and produce brochures and teach about it.  These classes were taught all over the country, including here in Nashville. According to the JBS, Agenda 21 is a plot to take away all property rights, force people to live in tiny apartments and kill 97% of the worlds population by poisoning them with aspartame and fluoride. Crazy I know, but that is the theory. Everything from wide sidewalks, to roundabouts, to traffic calming, to mass transit, to art in public places, to bike share programs, to water conservation, to reintroduction of wolves in the wild became suspect as part of the grand conspiracy of Agenda 21.

The reemergence of the JBS caused me concern but I viewed them as nutty opportunist attaching themselves to the tea party and that did not make me less enthusiastic about the tea party. There were also others associated with the movement that made me a little uncomfortable, but I dismissed them as the extreme fringe or people simply carried away with enthusiasm and exhibiting over-the-top exuberance. In the early days it seemed that the speakers and leaders never engaged in excessively militant rhetoric and discouraged any thing that would bring discredit on the movement. Contrary to what some in the mainstream press said, I never saw even the slightest hint of racism associated with the movement.

In September, 2009 I attended a "liberty rally" at municipal auditorium that made me a little uneasy. The primary spokesman at the event was  Dr. Bob Basso, who portrays Thomas Paine in numerous YouTube videos and personal appearances across the country. There was a big crowd and lots of enthusiasm and waving of flags and cheering at the event. I joined in the  enthusiasm of the moment. However, Basso pandered to the birthers at this event. He said something to this effect: “I have been called a community organizer and to a certain extend I guess I am but,” and here he paused and reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of paper and held it up and said, “I am a community organizer with a birth certificate.” The audience went wild and cheered.  I did not. I think the birther movement is a discredit to the conservative movement and I want no part of it. As his speech went on, I also cheered  and applauded. I also want to throw the bums out. I want to reduce the size of government, etc. etc. I want to “take my country back.” As his talk went on however, he nearly advocated secession and resistance to paying taxes. I am not ready to take up arms and man the barricades. I knew this brand of tea partyism was something I did not want to be part of and I said at the time, "I feel that if the extremism is not curtailed the movement will be discredited."

While there were various other events that I attended and enthusiastically endorsed, such as the Gibson Guitar event and the Education Reform event, more and more I found myself parting ways with factions of the tea party. One group identified as "tea party" is the Glen Beck associated 9-12 group. In July of 2012, our own local 9-12 chapter took out a full-page, $5000 advertisement called, "an open letter to Governor Haslam and the people of Tennessee." It said the actions of Governor Haslam would make us subject to Sharia law and attacked Governor Haslam for his administration's hiring of a highly qualified Tennessee attorney who happened to be a Muslim. I find that just nuts and a waste of time and money, and bigoted and wrong.

People identified as "tea party" were also heavily involved in efforts to stop the building of a Mosque in Murfressboro. While I recognize the threat of radical Islam, you do not combat that threat by denying Freedom of Religion. Opponents of the Mosque took the unbelievable position that Islam is not really a religion but rather an ideology and therefore should not have the protections of freedom of religion guaranteed in the Constitution. It seems a lot of tea partiers have a much different interpretation of the First Amendment than I do.  Maybe if they can deny First Amendment protection to Muslims, then next it will be the Church of Scientology, then Jehovah Witness, and maybe Mormons. After all, Mormonism is not really a religion but a cult, I can hear them argue. And Buddhism? Why, that is not a religion; it is a foreign philosophy.  Buddhist don't even claim a deity. Surely the First Amendment does not apply to Buddhist. Don't allow them to build temples! Where would it end?

While I disagree with the way some in the tea party movement interpret the First Amendment, I also
disagree with them on the Second Amendment. While they want to shrink the First Amendment to mean much less, they want to expand the Second Amendment to mean much more. Some who claim to be supporting the Second Amendment want to interpret the Second Amendment to mean they can trample my private property rights and can carry a gun into my home or my place of business even if I have a "no guns" policy.  Clearly the second amendment is a restriction on government, not on the right of someone to prohibit guns on their private property. Elements of the tea party defeated Debra Maggart, a good leader of the Tennessee Republican Party in the State legislature, over this issue.

Another issue that causes me concern is the many tea party people who disregard the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution and support the   discredited  theory of nullification. Nullification says each state can decide whether or not a federal law shall have effect in their state. Even George Wallace when he stood in a school house door to stop integration of the University of Alabama did not do so on the basis of nullification. When the National Guard was federalized, he stepped aside. Tea party members of the State legislature have introduced laws that would require local law enforcement officers to arrest federal agents enforcing federal law. I am not ready to join an armed rebellion and engage in insurrection.

some "tea party" candidates elected who I admire and support such as Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Ted Curz, Tom Coburn, and Mike Lee. However, the tea party has also supported some embarrassing losers like  Christine O'Donnell in Delaware of "I am not a witch" fame, and Sharron Angle who won the primary to run against Senate majority leader Harry Reid and then lost the election when a more establishment Republican could have probably beat Reid. Candidates backed by the tea party effectively cost the GOP five winnable Senate elections in 2010 and 2012 in Nevada, Delaware, Colorado, Indiana and Missouri. Todd Akin lost in Missouri, Richard Mourdock lost in Indiana, and Linda McMahon lost in Connecticut.

think Muslims have the right to First Amendment protection and thinks the Second Amendment allows an individuals to carry a gun on to private property where the owner does not want one to carry a gun. In addition Carr has ran a bumbling campaign. Should, by some miracle he win the Republican nomination, Democrat Terry Adams would most likely be the next Senator from Tennessee.

The tea party is not a political party, but rather a movement. It is a conservative-libertarian-populist movement and I have considered myself part of it. Even when disagreeing with some of the factions in the movement and some of the leaders of the movement, I still though myself as part of it.  No one person can speak for the tea party. I have occasionally been asked if I am part of the tea party and in the past I have proudly said I was. If to be a member in good standing of the tea party however means one has to support Joe Carr, believe in nullification, believe the First Amendment does not apply to Muslims and believe the Second Amendment trumps property rights, then I no longer want to be part of it.

County Republican Parties taken over by right wing fringe condemn Haslam

Apparently several county Republican parties across the State have been taken over by elements of the right wing fringe. I really hate to publicly criticize other Republicans at a time we ought to be focused on denying Obama a second term. I would much rather just ignore our differences.  However, when the right wing fringe takes over County parties and passes resolutions condemning a great Republican governor who has reformed education, enacted tort reform, cut government waste, and cut taxes, they cannot be ignored. It is time for mainstream Republicans to take the party back from the radical fringe.

The Williamson County Republican Party, the Stewart County Republican Party, the Carroll County Republican Party and perhaps several others have adopted resolutions critical of Haslam. Stewart and Carroll County call for the State Executive Committee to take “appropriate action against the administration of Governor Bill Haslam.” 

While the Haslam position on guns in parking lots and his refusal to sign a joint house resolution condemning Agenda 21,  a United Nations report on sustainability which the legislature condemned as an "insidious" communist plot, has irritated the extreme right, the thing that has really made the right wing  kooks go off the deep end is that the Department of Economic and Community Development hired a well-qualified, Tennessee native, who happens to be a Muslim, to head its international trade office.

Bilderberg conspiracies have become a handicap for the Liberty Movement

Most in the constitutional conservative or libertarian movements do not subscribe to conspiracy theories, just like most conventional right-wingers don't subscribe to Birtherism, but the small minority who do continue to embarrass and hinder everyone's efforts. Playing into our enemies' worst stereotypes is not an asset. (read more)

It is heartening and refreshing to see conservative activist speak out against the bithers and Birchers. The last thing the conservative movement needs is to have the movement defined by the nut fringe.  In the late 60's,Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley, Jr. had to step forward and denounce the John Birch Society. It is time for Republican statesmen to again denounce the JBS and other nut fringe groups who bring discredit to the cause of limited government and liberty.

A split in conservative ranks: Why is Tim Rudd picking a fight with 9/12?

Tim Rudd has taken an action which I am sure is likely to anger a large and active faction of the Republican Party in middle Tennessee. Rudd is the Senate District 13 member of the State Executive Committee of the Tennessee Republican Party representing Lincoln, Marshall, Maury,and Rutherford counties. Today he sent an email to various elected officials and candidates for office urging them not to participate in a vetting questionnaire and debate sponsored by the local 9/12 group.

Nine-twelve is an organization started by TV and radio personality by Glenn Beck and there are about five hundred of these groups across the country, or at least there once were.  I don't know how many of these groups still exist and if many of them have faded away or not, nor how active they are.

In middle Tennessee the 9/12 group is very active.  They have monthly social gathering and training session and they volunteer in campaigns and have an active social media network. They are headed by J. Lee Douglas who is a likeable guy and a talented leader. There membership may number in the hundreds. With grass roots groups like this, it hard to say what is the membership number. I assume, I am a member. I joined the face book page and am on the mailing list. So, whether active members are as few as 20 or as many as 700, I don't know.

The group is committed to core conservative economic and social values and advocates limited government and low taxes but does wander off into the anti-freedom of religion for Muslims territory and anti-agenda 21 conspiracy territory from time to time.  I am in agreement with most of their views except for the these areas.  Sometimes the rhetoric of some of the 9-12 members can sound pretty harsh and radical, however. They are definitely not "big-tent" Republicans. Some of the 9/12 members are quick to denounce other Republicans as RINO (Republican in Name Only) unless they are 100% in agreement with their own opinion.  Denunciation of Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker and Bill Haslam as RINO's is common in the email exchanges of the local 9/12 group.

Despite my above difference with some of the group, I know a lot of nine-twelvers and know them to be the people who will man the phone lines and go door to door campaigning and who will contribute money to the cause. They are dedicated and hardworking and passionate. 

I don't know Tim Rudd, but I was surprised to see a Republican in his position pick a fight with nine-twelvers by urging Republican candidates not to answer their questionnaire nor participate in their debate. I don't know if the letter from Rudd represented only the opinion of Tim Rudd or if this was a move by the Republican Party establishment to retaliate against this 9-12 group for some of their attacks on Republican leaders.

Watch this development to see what, if anything, happens.  The radical faction of the John Birch Society and other fringe groups have been making inroads into the Republican Party and at some point, in my view, the party is going to have to take a stand against some of the more nutty fringe Republicans. However, I do not think picking this fight at this time with this group over this issue was the right time to start a party purge. I would like to know what is going on.

Dear Fellow Republicans and Candidates for Republican Nomination,

Recently a non-Republican organization (9/12) sent out a “vetting” questionnaire and requested that you attend a debate sponsored by them. I urge you not to participate in this unauthorized “vetting” process. No organization outside the Republican Party has the right or responsibility to vet, interview or determine who the Republican Party’s nominee should be.

I both encourage individuals and non-partisan organizations to be involved in the political process. But, no one outside of any political organization has the right to interfere with another organization’s process. What would be the response if the Republican Party Executive Committee ask members of the Democratic Party, Libertarian Party, John Birch Society, Campaign For Liberty, 9 /12, League of Women Voters, the Tea Party or the Chamber of Commerce to report to the next GOP meeting for us to vet who should either lead those organizations or be nominees for their political parties? The response would be outrage, power grab, unethical, etc.

Any individual from any outside organization that is a Republican should volunteer and participate in the Republican Primary in support of one of our candidates, but not on behalf of an outside organization. Organizations like 9/12, the Small Business Alliance or the Middle Tennessee Property Rights Coalition can and should get involved in the General election by supporting either the Democratic, Republican or Independent candidates. ---- But not in OUR GOP PRIMARY!

The only people that should “VET” our Republican candidates are Republican Caucus or Primary voters and the Republican Party leadership. We ask that you respectfully decline participating in their or any other outside “Vetting Process” and respect the Republican Party’s process.

More on Haslam not signing of the Anti-Agenda 21 Resolution

by Rod Williams, May 11, 2012 - I do not blame Governor Haslam for trying to lay low about not signing the House Joint Resolution in which, "the General Assembly recognizes the destructive and insidious nature of United Nations Agenda 21 and hereby exposes to the public and public policymakers the dangerous intent of the plan."

The Republican National Committee has passed a resolution opposing Agenda 21.  Many county Republican party chairmen across the state, including unfortunately Nashville's own Kathleen Starnes, have jumped on the John Birch Society steered bandwagon denouncing it.  Tea party groups, bloggers and numerous conservative activists have joined the chorus. If I were Governor Haslam, I also would  not have signed the hysterical nonsense that is House Joint Resolution 587, however I would not pick a fight with the whole Republican establishment and an army of conservative activist who have drank the John Birch Society's conspiracy theory Kool Aid.

I am sure Governor Haslam thought he could just quietly let the resolution go into effect without his signature and thus not sign it but not have to veto it and call attention to his opposition. Unfortunately for Governor Haslum, he is not getting off that easy. Blue Collar Muse, yesterday, reported that the House Joint Resolution had gone into effect unsigned by the Governor.  I then opined on the issue praising the Governor for not signing the resolution, saying I thought I was the only sane Republican left and stating how proud I was of him for not signing it.

Now, the fact that the Governor has not signed the resolution has been picked up by Nashville Public Radio WPLN. They report that a spokesman says that while Haslam doesn’t support Agenda 21, he “didn’t feel compelled and isn’t required to take any action on the resolution.” They then report, "almost two thousand joint resolutions have passed since Haslam took office last year. WPLN searched through hundreds and couldn’t find a single other time the governor didn’t sign one."

This may be the end of the story.  However, if the more zealous factions of the tea party smell blood in the water, they may not let this issue die. If they aggressively go after the Governor the main stream press may take interest.

Governor Haslam, I am sure, would rather continue his focus on creating jobs and improving government efficiency and managing the affairs of this state rather than deal with this distraction. However, at some point someone is gong to have to stand up to the paranoid conspiracy theorist who have gained a foot hold in the Republican Party. Governor Haslam may be the one to do it.

Now you know where all of these experts are coming from in almost every county in America to teach about Agenda 21.  And, where the sample legislation is coming from that is getting introduced in state after state.  For $195 you too can be an expert.

I am not saying that we should not be concerned about the influence of Agenda 21. I am not taking the position that Agenda 21, which has no force in law, may not contain some policy proposals that we should reject. I am saying you should take with a grain of salt anything that comes from the John Birch Society.

If this interest in Agenda 21 causes more people to start reading their local government's General Plan, then that is a good thing. I think that more people should get involved in zoning and planning issues and be better informed about what policies their planning commissions and local governing bodies are adopting. I think local governments can exert too much control. They can adopt bad polices. We need more citizen awareness and involvement.

I tried to read agenda 21 for myself but only read about the first six of the forty chapters. It is real boring and I always seem to have something more important to do. I have read a lot about it and watched internet videos, but I can't seem to get much real information about Agenda 21 from any reputable source. An analysis of Agenda 21 has not been done by Cato, or Heritage or any other of the reputable conservative policy study groups. It has not been denounced by David Brooks or George Will are any of the other dozens of reputable conservative columnist. With the exception of Glen Beck, I don't think it gets more than a quick passing reference from anyone.

Across the nation in city after city, people are denouncing all sorts of things as part of the Agenda 21 agenda. Below is a list:

• outcome based education
• sustainable agriculture 
• Community assets inventory 
• Traffic Roundabouts 
• greenways and bikeways 
• conservation easements 
• General Land use Plans 
• Neighborhood groups 
• Smart growth 
• Smart Meters 
• Community oriented policing 
• opposition to suburban sprawl 
• opposition to road expansions 
• requirements that parking lots be paved 
• requirements that commercial enterprises have a minimum number of parking spaces 
• the effort to regulate dietary supplements and organic foods

This is real. If you doubt it, Google any of the terms above combined with "Agenda 21." Everything someone doesn't like is getting denounced as part of Agenda 21.

I really like greenways.  I thing community policing is the way they used to do policing when policemen walked a beat and is a good thing.  I have driven in Europe where roundabouts are common. They make a lot of sense, increase safety and save time idling at traffic lights, yet apparently they too are part of the Agenda 21 conspiracy.   Please, please think before you denounce something you don't like as being part of the Agenda 21 conspiracy. Just say, "I don't like roundabouts." You don't have to denounce it as part of Agenda 21.

If you go to a public education meeting on Agenda 21, you might want to ask your expert, if he got his expertize for $195 from the John Birch Society.

Anti-Agenda 21 House Joint Resolution passes, signed.

House Joint Resolution 0587, which was drafted by the discredited paranoid conspiracy theorist John Birch Society and which, "recognizes the destructive and insidious nature of United Nations Agenda 21," was approved 19-11 in the Senate today and signed by the Speaker of the House. I assume that like in the House, Democrats voted to oppose and Republicans voted to approve. The House passed the measure 72-23 on March 15th.

 Below is the text of the resolution:

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 587

A RESOLUTION relative to United Nations Agenda 21

.

WHEREAS, the United Nations Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of extreme
environmentalism, social engineering, and global political control that was initiated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992; and 

WHEREAS, the United Nations Agenda 21 is being covertly pushed into local communities throughout the United States of America through the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) through local “sustainable development” policies such as Smart Growth, Wildlands Project, Resilient Cities, Regional Visioning Projects, and other “Green” or “Alternative” projects; and 

 WHEREAS, this United Nations Agenda 21 plan of radical so-called “sustainable
development” views the American way of life of private property ownership, single-family homes, private car ownership and individual travel choices, and privately owned farms all as destructive to the environment; and 

WHEREAS, according to the United Nations Agenda 21 policy, social justice is
described as the right and opportunity of all people to benefit equally from the resources
afforded us by society and the environment which would be accomplished by
socialist/communist redistribution of wealth; and

WHEREAS, according to the United Nations Agenda 21 policy, national sovereignty is
deemed a social injustice; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE CONCURRING, that the General Assembly recognizes the destructive and insidious nature of United Nations Agenda 21 and hereby exposes to the public and public policymakers the dangerous intent of the plan.

 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that neither the U.S. government nor any state or local
government is legally bound by the United Nations Agenda 21 treaty in that it has never been endorsed by the U.S. Senate.

 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the federal government and state and local
governments across the country be well informed of the underlying harmful implications of implementation of United Nations Agenda 21 destructive strategies for “sustainable
development,” and we hereby endorse rejection of its radical policies and rejection of any grant monies attached to it. 

This is only a joint resolution which, much like a United Nations study, has absolutely no force in law. It just expresses an opinion, much like a United Nations study.
